Produced with a solid alloy or brass frame, turned spool drum with check‑row holes or solid rim in later versions. Mk II versions often include refinements in machining tolerances and finishes. The click‑drag or check mechanism is made of hardened spring steel; the pawls or dogs are shaped and tempered. Side plates are soldered or screwed, with perfection in rim alignment so spool tracks correctly. Bearing surfaces are polished; the drag is strong and audible for control. Surface finishing involves plating or varnishing, with engraving or Hardy hallmarking. Screws and latch hardware are nickel silver or plated steel.
