Recommended Tackle:
Rods: 9 and 10 weight rods are best. 11 weight rods are ideal for larger species such as tuna and billfish.
Reels: Reels should have a strong disk drag and be rigged with 30lb. or stronger braided backing.
Lines: Tropical floating lines are most common but intermediate tip and fast sinking lines are useful for when the fish are feeding more aggressively below the surface. (Please contact Urban Angler for specific line recommendations.)
Leaders & Tippet: 9' saltwater leaders 15, 20, 30, and 40lb. are ideal. Tapered leaders are not required but are easier to cast than straight monofilament leaders. Tippet spools ranging from 15-40lb. are ideal if you prefer to create your own leaders. Shock tippet spools of 50 and 60lb. are useful for targeting tuna or billfish. Fluorocarbon leaders and tippet are helpful but standard monofilament is the most common material.
Flies: The fish are typically feeding on large schools of baitfish. These baitfish are 2-4" long and predominately silver with dark backs. Baitfish flies should be on #2 - #2/0 hooks. The most effective colors are: white, white/tan, white/grey, white/olive. Large poppers can be effective and fun to use while the fish are blitzing.
Communications: WiFi is available at Baja House as well as good cellular service in most locations.
Weather: Hot and sunny! (85-95° F)
Safety: La Ventana is a very safe small town.
8 hour fishing day from approximately 6:00am to approximately 1:00pm. Most of the day will be spent sight fishing from the boat and casting to blitzing fish. Tropical fishing clothing (lightweight and quick drying) is recommended as the weather is typically sunny, dry, and very hot.
After returning to the house each afternoon, we will be greeted with refreshing drinks and a late lunch. When not fishing from the boats you will be free to hang out by the pool, swim at the beach in front of the house, or continue fishing from the beach.
