Description

Sparse Grey Hackle was the pen name of Alfred W. Miller (1892-1983), an angler whose essays and articles on fly fishing appeared in many publications. The Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum, whose Hall of Fame includes him, notes that he was called the "Dean of American Fly Fishermen," and credits his writing with conveying the experience of fishing the Catskill rivers. His stories blend wit, history and affectionate embellishment, and Fishless Days, Angling Nights (1971) is held up by the museum as a hallmark of what fly fishing is about. Privately printed for The Anglers' Club of New York, this volume honors Sparse and his writing under the editorship of Austin M. Francis, the club's librarian and author of Catskill Rivers and Land of Little Rivers.
