Flies: The fish are typically feeding near the shore on a range of small to large insects. Flies can be purchased ahead of time or at the lodge (prices listed at lodge range from $3-$6/ea). A variety of flies can be used all ranging from size 6-14
Streamers - Balance Leech and Wooly Buggers are most typically used (size 6-10)
Nymphs - Typically bead head flies are used in any variations of Scuds/Prince/Hares Ear (size 10-12). Heavy wire hooks are recommended.
Dries - Hoppers are very good as well as attractor patterns like Bombers/Humpy's/Wulff Irresistible/Beatles/Stimulators (size 8-10). Smaller dry flies are good to have as well, especially if the river is available to fish. Caddis/Midge (size 10)
Communications: The Lodge has now 24 hours electric power supplied by a solar system (220 volts, 50 cycles). A standard converter and European adapter for two pronged plug should work fine throughout Argentina and at Jurassic Lake Lodge. The Lodge also has a satellite phone for emergency use and 24 hours internet connection with WIFI. There is no cell phone service.
Weather: The region is very windy and harsh so come well prepared! Temperatures can vary widely and the area can be hot especially in February. The early season and especially March and April can be cold. Sunscreen should always be packed as should quality wind proof clothing.
Clothing: It is recommended that anglers layer their clothing, enabling the adding and subtracting of garments throughout the day. Pack windstopper fleece jackets, thermal underwear, wool socks and a wool cap to be prepared for the extreme wind and weather that the area is rightfully famous for. Layering with wool or synthetics is always recommended and avoid cotton. A reliable windstopper fleece and a high quality rain jacket are mandatory. Several pairs of gloves are also a good idea if traveling to the lake in late March or April. Rugged waterproof camp shoes are also a good choice. Latex-free gloves are a good choice as well to wear under your gloves, this will keep your hands dry and warm.
Waders & Wading Boots & Wading Jacket
1x Thermal Underwear / Fleece Bibs
Cold Weather Gloves & Stocking hat (recommended to bring several latex free gloves to wear under)
Synthetic Sweater/Jacket (nano puff style jackets are a good idea)
2x Pairs of sunglasses
4x Pairs of socks
Buff
Cap
Safety: This area is safe and remote, however, Calafate is the closest hospital and 8 hours from the Lodge. Due to the remote location, we strongly recommend that anglers purchase travel insurance and medical evacuation coverage.
At Jurassic Lake Lodge, all of our fishing is done while wading or standing on the bank. Typically, a single guide will spend the day with a group of two or three anglers, depending on which beat is being fished. During a week’s visit to the Lodge, anglers will have the opportunity to fish different section of the Barrancoso River and any number of bays on Strobel Lake, including the inlet where the Barrancoso enters the lake. During the high water season, visiting anglers also gain access to beautiful Moro Creek and its surrounding lagoons. This small creek fishes great with dry flies.
All of this incredible water, which includes the most productive sections within the entire watershed, are located on our property. Our guests enjoy exclusive access to these beats, some of which are only a short walk from the Lodge. The beats a little further away are accessed by brief truck rides across our property.
Throughout our season, and depending on the particular beat being fished, we use different sizes of single and double hand rods and a variety of flies. Detailed information on tackle is listed further down on this page, along with recommendations for clothing and other essential gear.
