Tying Steelhead Flies With Style is an exciting new book written and photographed by two of today’s most talented anadromous fly tiers: Dec Hogan, internationally recognized steelhead angler and author of A Passion for Steelhead, together with master steelhead fly tier and photographer Marty Howard.
This gorgeous book features hundreds of eye-popping color pages. In large, clear, step-by-step photos with easy-to-follow instructions, the authors teach the reader how to tie 25 of their most effective traditional and contemporary flies for both summer-run and winter-run steelhead.
This lavish production sets a new standard for fly-tying instruction in the world of designing flies for steelhead and salmon.
Dec Hogan is, of course, well known as the author of our landmark book, A Passion for Steelhead (2006), and is in popular demand at spey-casting clinics throughout the country. Dec pulled on his waders and refined his river craft while guiding professionally on steelhead rivers throughout the Northwest, as diverse as Washington’s brawling, green-tinted Skagit in winter and spring, to Oregon’s clear, sagebrush-lined Deschutes in summer and autumn. Today he is an active firefighter and emergency medical technician in Utah.
Co-author Marty Howard also lives in Utah. He is a retired career police officer. Marty is one of the most talented “unsung” fly tiers of our generation. He attracts attention when demonstrating tying his exquisite steelhead flies at events and shows throughout the West. His skills are impressive, his style impeccable. And he also hand-makes sweet split-cane fly rods. Together, the team of Hogan and Howard combine keen aesthetic eyes with many seasons of experience on the water, ceaselessly questing for the keys to qualities in a fly that trigger a steelhead to strike.
